Staff Appreciation Luncheon: The next Staff Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Thursday, March 1st -- 3rd & 9th grade classes along with the PTA have been chosen this month to contribute a dish for our teachers & staff. This month’s theme is “rice bowls.’ Please go to PerfectPotluck.com. Coordinator: Hill Password: 0218 to sign up for what you would like to bring. Drop off your dish in the teacher workroom (behind the office) anytime between 10:30 and 12:30. Elementary teachers have lunch around 11:00 and MS/HS teachers are 12:45-1:30. Thank you very much for your help. Our teachers and staff greatly appreciate it!!


CBCS Talent Show: The 14th Annual CBCS Talent Show will be on Wednesday, April 4th at 5:30pm in the MPR/Cafeteria. Sign up will be through Google and MyPaymentsPlus beginning at 3:30 on March 14. The first 30 acts to sign-up and pay the $5.00 entry fee will be accepted. We will publish registration and payment details as the date gets closer. We are looking forward to another successful and fun show!


Snack Donations: We are always accepting donations of crackers, granola bars, and other single serving stacks that we can provide for students in need. If you would like to donate snacks, please bring those items to the office and we will distribute them appropriately.


Lost & Found: Items still in the cafeteria will be donated soon. Please stop by the school to look through the lost & found.


Winter Break Reminder: No school February 19th-23rd.


After Prom: It is time to begin planning the 6th Annual 2018 After Prom Party! The Prom will be on April 28th with AfterProm following. If you’d like participate in planning an event that provides an alcohol/substance free alternative to our prom attendees, please contact Caren Carroll at: 970.209.6960 or carencarroll@gmail.com.  I will be scheduling the first meeting in the next two weeks.  Remember the saying, “MANY HANDS CREATE LIGHT WORK.” Please support this important event!


Choice Pass:

February 24th – Middle & High School Ice Skating at Big Mine Ice Rink in Crested Butte 6-8pm. Free skate rentals for Choice Pass students. Music, games, S’mores and Hot Chocolate!!

February 11th & 25th - Sunday Sessions Ski Program on the Mountain Intermediate level 1:15-4:30. Come ski and eat pizza after!! Must register by the Thursday at 5pm before the weekend you want to go.

March 3rd - Middle School Night at the Rec Center 6-9pm! Music, Games, Food, Dancing, and Swimming!! Dodgeball in the Mat Room! Best Trick competition off the diving board!! Free!! ($3 for non-choice pass students)

March 4th & 25th - Sunday Sessions Ski Program on the Mountain Expert level 1:15-4:30. Come ski and eat pizza after!! Must register by the Thursday at 5pm before the weekend you want to go.

March - Back-country ski days to be announced! (only for students who have taken an avalanche safety course)


PTA:

Box Tops: It's that time of year again to turn in your BOX TOPS to the school office. The upcoming deadline is Friday, February 23rd at 3:30.  Last year the school made over $500 by YOU diligently saving and turning in your BOX TOPS! Let's try to beat last year’s total and make even more FREE money for CBCS! Also, this year the CB Library is accepting BOX TOPS so tell your friends and neighbors around town that they can participate as well.

Enrichment Programs:

February Break Community Workshops for grades K-6: Join us February 20-23 (Tuesday -Friday) from 8:30-3:30 in the MPR for art projects, science experiments, fun with food, games in the gym, Legos and more! Movement Mapping Workshops: This week, students in several classes will have the opportunity to work with artist Mecca Maydun. Workshops will focus on movement, storytelling & interactive cultural dialogue. Funded by the CBCS Enrichment Program and the Crested Butte Elementary School.

Middle School Art Club: for grades 6-8. This new club will focus on sculpture and jewelry and will meet on Tuesdays, January 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13 from 3:30-4:30 in Ms. Elise’s art room (A210). Thank you to the Center for the Arts and the Art Studio for sponsoring this club.

Improv Club (new meeting location): for 7th-12th graders: The Mountain Theatre and the CBCS Enrichment Program have teamed up to offer this club, which will meet in Craig Lamar’s classroom (D202) from 3:45-4:45 Wednesdays, from January 17 until the school talent show in April. Drama Club for 3rd-5th Graders: Join us on Thursdays, Jan. 25 - April 5 (not March 29; P/T conference) from 3:30-4:30 in Brynn’s 4th grade classroom (A208). Learn about acting, script-writing and what is involved in putting on a play. Our theme will be “Dreams.” This club will conclude with a performance in April. K-2 Lego Club Update: Monday, February 12 will be the final meeting for Session 3 of Lego Club. The club will meet in the CBCS library from 3:30 - 4:30. Lego Club is sponsored by the Rotary Club, the Dryer Family, and the CB Animal Hospital. The 4th session of Lego Club will meet on Tuesdays, March 6, 13, 20 & 27 and will be open to all (repeaters allowed). Sign up for Session 4 in the office or email Jill at: jill@vantiel.com

Elementary Spanish: Spanish class for grades 1 & 2 will meet in Ms. Nicole’s classroom (A105). Spanish classes for grades 3-5 will meet in Ms. Camille’s room (A209). Both classes meet on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 and will run through May. Questions? Contact Jill at: jill@vantiel.com.

Marbles Club: for grades 1-8. The spring session for this club will meet on Mondays, March 5 - April 2 from 3:30-4:15 in the hallway outside Sandy’s gym. There will be a Marbles Tournament on Saturday, April 7 in Gunnison. Thank you to Jerry Piquette for heading up this club. Sign up in the office. Spring Sports:

Crested Butte High School Spring Sports Start February 26th! (Monday after February break)

  • Track will begin at 3:45 in the secondary gym

Athletes will be going to Gunnison on Tuesdays to use the field house, so an additional waiver for the field house must be submitted. These waivers can be picked up outside Coach Daniels’s classroom. Athletes need clothes for running outside in all weather (long pants, long sleeves, hat/headband, and gloves) and good running shoes. All levels of track experience are welcome! 

  • Girls Soccer will begin at 3:45 in the elementary gym

Final Sophomore NightTuesday, February 13th at 6:00 p.m. in the MPR. If you were not able to make it to one of the meetings last week, please plan to attend this one hour presentation. We will review transcripts and credits, discuss recent PSAT scores, and plan for the rest of high school and beyond. Summer High School Science Course: Rocky Mtn. Bio. Lab and the Gunnison School district are offering a field biology course July 30-Aug. 11, 2018. Leadership Opportunity for Current High School StudentsGWSD will be taking a group of high school students to Santa Fe for a United World Colleges conference April 13-15. Topics include conflict resolution, global challenges, youth theatre, climate policy, and more. This is a free opportunity! County Sheriffs of Colorado Scholarship: Must attend college in Colorado. Deadline: February 23rd. App available at www.csoc.org.

Colorado Press Association Scholarship: Scholarship available for journalism majors studying at a four-year school in Colorado next fall. Deadline: February 28th. See counselor for application. 

Crested Butte Rotary Club Scholarship: Must enroll in higher ed in the fall term immediately following graduation. Deadline: February 28th. Application available at: www.crestedbutterotary.org

Gunnison County Education Association Scholarship: Student must plan to pursue a career in the teaching field. Deadline: March 1st. See counselor for app. 

Colorado PTA Scholarship: Student must be a member of the CBCS PTA and have a 2.5 GPA.Deadline: March 1st. See counselor for app. 

Gunnison Memorial Scholarship: Financial need required. Deadline: March 15th. Application available at: cfgv.org.

Gunnison Kiwanis Club Scholarship: Community service and financial need considered. Deadline: March 15th. Application available at: cfgv.org

Gunnison Valley Masonic Lodge Scholarship: Must attend a college in Colorado. Financial need considered. Deadline: March 15th. See counselor for application. 

RBC Wealth Management Scholarship: Scholarship available for students pursuing a degree in science, math, or engineering. Deadline: March 16th. See counselor for app.

American Public Works Association Scholarship: Scholarship for students considering a career in public works. Acceptable majors include civil engineering, structural engineering, geology, landscape architecture. For complete list and application, see counselor. Deadline: March 19th.

Crested Butte Friends of the Library Essay Contest: CB FOL will hold the annual senior essay contest on Thursday, March 29th at 2:30 in the CBCS library. They will award a $1,000 scholarship and a $500 scholarship for this one-hour essay. All graduating seniors are encouraged to participate! 

Assoc. Builders & Contractors Scholarship: Scholarship available for students pursuing a career in construction. See counselor for application. Deadline: March 30th

Gunnison County Republicans Liberty Scholarship: Scholarship available for graduating seniors. Deadline: April 6th. Essay required. See counselor for application.

NuVista Credit Union ScholarshipOpen to NuVista members or family members living in the same household. Deadline: April 9th. See counselor for application.
